Who knew analytics could be so much fun?

Doing some analytics of the various forms of social media I am using to promote the Ed Parker Kenpo App and I have to say, it’s interesting stuff. (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr)

Facebook is proving especially interesting in so far as, while most of my REACH and LIKES were generated from posting stuff about Kenpo or Kenpo related things, I generated the most LIKES IN ONE DAY after I printed something about the app itself! 19 People! In 1 day! It’s not a lot, but that’s 19 people who saw that and went “hello! count me interested!”.

It’s things like these that make the last 7 months focusing on the same thing kind of worth it.

The feedback when I release it, will make it all the sweeter. :)

They Came Through

I asked and THEY delivered.

Bob and Barbara White were absolute saints to send me a few videos they did of teaching the basics of the yellow and orange belt syllabus. I was allowed to use anything I could get from them, which was a LOT. I chose to use photographs, as it tied in with the rest of the app, but they came out so well.

May change the layout of the vertical picture though, something is not quite right.

New Look Quiz Page

Following the presentation for Hugh the other weekend, I have modified the Quiz Page so that it works, it has clear, big, obvious buttons that in my opinion, suit the app and the device it will be deployed on.

Now for this to work I have had to copy a lot of code from the Sample projects on Corona Sdk, but I will:

A) Be pointing this out in the report

B) Be pointing this out in the code

C) IT is there for that reason, so we may learn and adapt and teach.

Next up:

Make the app deploy to Facebook

Make the app connect to private Youtube links that only work from the app

Finish the Quiz questions

GET CONTENT from instructors.

It is difficult to tell someone who can snap you like a twig to HURRY UP!

Warning

To me a warning page was vital for this app. I also did not want a HOME page as such, I just wanted the User to be dropped into the app. With the bottom level navigation bar being there constantly, I knew I did not need a home page as such. And I was at a loss as to where to put the warning, then I decided on a Splash page.

On websites, these are redundant and annoying, however, on apps they lend a polish, clarity and something that the user has to see.

In this case, there is not timing on this, so if the User has seen this, they can just tap twice and get straight to the app quickly, however, if they are only new to the app, and read a little slower, the warning stays there for as long as they need it to.

A lot done, more to do.

Had my first meeting with my supervisor. It was a mildly terrifying experience but I am so glad it happened. We discussed the finer points of report writing, the level of my code and what I have done so far, where my focus should be and User Testing.

Lots of talking about testing. IT was also a nice experience to be talking to someone about this who is actually interested in what I am doing and UNDERSTANDS it. I have been bending the ear off of anyone who will listen about what I am building but as they only deal with code OR a martial art, there’s a lot of “Oh is it not done yet?”, “That doesn’t seem too complicated”.

And a lot more sentences like that. He gets that trying to coalesce these two areas into one wokring app that makes sense and functions well is difficult.

He reckons I am about 60% done and my work ethic over the Summer really paid off.

God it feels good knowing someone can see that.

He also LOVED the Facebook page. :D
